Welcome! I’m so glad to have you here! I hope you decide to stay and check out my blog, maybe even subscibe. But even if you don’t, I’ll still let you enter. 😉 My name is Kristin and I’m a wife of a super-smart and sweet computer guy and mama to 3 precious, mischievious, and fun boys. I love to sew pretty much anything, though with more success on some things than others! I have an Etsy shop and also enjoy making things for my boys. WARNING, Blatant self-promotion coming: I have some great gifts for sale right now. Okay, enough of that!
Now on to what you’ve come here for! I’m offering up the winners choice of 2 yards of County Fair fabric by Denyse Schmidt (my choice which ones) or a FRE of scraps, whichever you would prefer. I’m also going to include some handmade goodness, but I haven’t decided what i want to make, so it will be a surprise. I might even wait until a winner is chosen and make something based on that. We’ll see! The giveaway will close on Sunday night or Monday morning, depending on when I get to it!

I’m not sure how big the pockets in your advent calendar will be, but could you put in a puzzle piece or two a day, or Legos, cards with fun activities planned (making cookies, driving around to look at lights, etc.). I hope you find some neat ideas!
I’ve just recently started to sew and I’m loving it. I found your blog and love your stuff, thank you so much for sharing!! I am behind the eight ball this year, but I was thinking of making an advent calender and every day having a chocolate or special treat. Our boys aren’t given sweets often so this would be something special and exciting to them.

What to put in the advent calendar. How about a new ornament for the year? We have bought our boys a new ornament every year and dated it. Someday, when they marry, they will start out with a nice collection.

Small cookie cutter for the advent calendar?
I love your blog just starting to follow it. I made an advent this year for the first time… we did activities for each day. Last night we had hot chocolate and marshmellows and read by the fire. It was great family time for everyone!
I love your site! As for the advent calendar, candy never fails, but you could also do those mini transformers or the hot wheels!

I fill my advent calendar with pictures (taken of the family throughout the year) and supply the photo album on Dec. 1 to fill up. ~H
You make some great stuff. I really like the picture of the girl looking over the fence while standing on the green lawn litered with fall leaves!
Stuff the pockets with something from nature, flower, grass, leaves, and then talk about the beauty God created.
You could put a rock…because He is the Rock of our Salvation! Or a candle because He is the Light of the World…or a piece of sweet bread because He is the Bread of Life!

We generally use a hard candy, any leftover mini halloween candy. The favorite from my childhood was a set of jacks. and then i couldnt wait till the next day to get the ball 🙂

What a great giveaway! I’d be inclined to make a little puzzle, so each day a different piece could be found and by Christmas you’d have it completed.
Great fabrics! My kids always vote candy! I say coupons for treats/time with Mom. My 3 kids love to be in the kitchen or creating with me.

Love this giveaway 🙂 As for the advent calendar, maybe a lip balm? I’m always giving my nieces flavored lip balm and they love to pretend it’s lipstick. Don’t know if it will fit in the pocket, though…

i was thinknig thesame thing about what to put into the pockets, as I dont want 25 days of candy first thing in the moring. you could check targets dollar section, and fill it with small toys, or little packs of crayons and paper. you can also put a little slip of paper with something special to do that day, like put up the tree, read an extra bedtiem story, or a special trip to the park with just mommy. i hope that helps!

I always loved it when my Mom would put the little round star mints in the pockets of our advent calendar. Sometimes she would hide a quarter or small toy in it too.

I’m loving the idea of putting a different activity in the pockets for each day. We just started doing something similar, and each night we turn off the lights and light candles for our family time. My two little ones LOVE it.
Ooooh, I’m sewing up little dollies like mad these days for my little girl. I would LOVE some fabric.
Also loving all the ideas for the advent calendar all your clever commenters left. I’m Jewish, so no advent calendar for me. But it’s got me thinking, maybe we could do a birthday countdown calendar?!? My husband likes to make a big deal out of birthdays and I bet he would get a huge kick out of one for our daughter – probably more than her!

Ooh, gorgeous fabric!
I just made our advent calendar last night, so I’m full of ideas – but all of mine were little activities, not actual gifts/goodies. I just made 24 slips of paper, each with an idea for something we would do that today. Today’s is “Make (and drink) hot chocolate.” This will be our first hot chocolate of the season (we’ll make it when they get home from school) and my boys are very excited.
Other slips of paper included:
– drive around town looking at Christmas lights
– family movie night with popcorn
– play a Wii sports game together
– everyone do something Daddy wants to do (I did one of these for each family member)
– buy foods kids like for our church food drive
– bake cookies together
– make Christmas cards
– tell everyone in the family something you love about them
– paint each other’s toenails
Etc. It was fun coming up with the ideas, and the boys are really excited to see what we’re going to do each day!

I have ideas for your advent calendar! I’m having a bit of trouble thinking of things myself … I’m sure there will be pockets that get filled the night before … but this is what I have so far:
peppermints, candy canes, chocolates (obviously)
candy coins
gum (gum is a BIG deal at our house)
small origami animal (you can find easy instructions all over the internet)
half dollar (you can get these at most banks but some how they always seem a bit magical)
paper toy (http://toy-a-day.blogspot.com/)
a ‘ticket’for a special activity (driving around looking at christmas lights, making gingerbread house, decorating sugar cookies)
I also added some fake tattoos in ours since I had them sitting in the cupboard and was short on ideas.
and also . . . I would really like to be entered in your contest Thank you!
I’d love 2 yards from Ms. Schmidt!!! Advent backup for us is chocolate, a quick good deed or chore (give a hug, feed the dog), or a craft…

Not sure how big your advent box/cubby/hideaway is. I saw some neat idea on the blogosphere to put a book or a piece of paper of family activity. Like one night, it says “Play family board game” or something. Or have a list of family activities to choose from and just put the piece of paper saying “Family activity” and the family get to choose which activity is fitting for the time frame you have that day. That way you get to do a few advent days with “family activities”

I finished my nine-year old daughter’s advent calendar yesterday. I bought wind-up toys from World Market, lots of super dark chocolate (her fave), holiday pencils and pens, little notebooks and sticky pads, silly putty, Christmas ornaments, Santa soap and erasers, candy (of course), packs of her fave sugar-free gum, a Kazoo, lip gloss, magic cards, candy canes, glitter lotion, Pez, keychain things for her backpack, etc. I think I go a little overboard, but she loves it!

I like the idea of including special activities in the advent calendar, like bake cookies for the neighbor, look at Christmas lights, and such. Or find some old fashioned candy to pop in there, to give them a taste of something different.

I would love that fabric. One of my favorite advents that we do has a note with a different Christmas activity to be done each day. It can be as elaborate as making cookies and delivering them, or as simple as reading a favorite holiday book. My kids love that.

Super fun! And love the Advent Calendar idea. Target has these coin gift cards they’re offering this year in $5 denominations…might be fun to sneak in there.
We are doing an advent activity at night with a jar full of questions. You could fill some of yours with questions. “What is your favorite Christmas memories” or one of our favorites was to have someone hum a christmas carol and everyone tries to guess which one it is.
That fabric is absolutely gorgeous! I love the red on the far left, and the small blue square flower pattern in the middle.
What about little people and animals for a nativity set? As you get closer to Christmas the set will get closer to being complete, and then it could end with the baby Jesus on Christmas morning.

Maybe a little pinewood derby car (like for cub scouts). You could even put the wheels in a different day so that they get the car body first and can decorate (or even carve with supervision) and then make the car later.
I made all my family on my husband’s side personal advent calendars made from gum packs (2 twelve packs = 24 days) for Thanksgiving this year. We aren’t meeting for Christmas, so I also put in gift cards or movie tickets for their Christmas gifts. So a gift card might be fun, or even better. Movie tickets. Put in one movie pass a day until you have enough for the whole family and then you can all go to the movies together.

For the advent calendar, what about a cloth bookmark (could be folded/rolled up if needed), or a folded up recipe, or a folded up “certificate” for a treat (ice cream cone, extra trip to the park, etc)?

Love DS fabrics, you have a darling blog. When I was a little girl I loved the advent calendar my mom did, for some reason there was a little, tiny ornament of a wood figure skiing. It was my favorite, so little ornaments! Good luck!

Great fabrics! Thanks for the chance! I’m working on an Advent calendar (will have to be for next year; I’m slow!) and we brainstormed a list of activities–some stuff we’d do anyway (get tree), some stuff we love to do (Messiah sing-a-long), and some simple things (read a fav. Christmas book).

Beautiful fabrics! The only advent calendars I had growing up were filled with chocolate. Nothing else, just different types of chocolate, so I’m guessing that’s not what you’re going for.

great giveaway! I love scraps, I find all sorts of things to make that I wouldn’t cut up yards for! For the advent calendar, ours has tiny boxes so I also struggled with what top do. I alternated little candy treats and slips of paper that have things like, ” have a treasure hunt today,” or “make Christmas cookies” Some other papers have, watch a holiday movie, make an ornament, build a whole room fort, etc. Good luck and have fun!

You could put “christmas notes” in the pockets, kind of like fortunes from a fortune cookie. That way you could change/update them each year.

Such great fabrics! For the advent calendar pockets, perhaps a stamp to send a letter to Santa?
advent calendars are so much fun. my family has had one since i was born, but we’ve been slowly filling the pockets until we have enough to make another advent calendar for my sister. our uses little ornaments attached to safety pins, and those pin onto a velvet christmas tree (i know there are myriad different kinds of advent calendars, and i’m not sure what kind yours is). we find little ornaments at after-christmas sales, garage sales, thrift stores… but we’ve also made most of them. we attached gold string to a giant mother-of-pearl button, and that’s one of our favorites. send the kidlets on a scavenged hunt around the house for tiny little things into which one might insert thread. also little things that show the personalities of the people using it — i found a dollhouse-version of the wizard of oz record for my sister, who loves the wizard of oz… little grecian urns from a rummage sale (as i study ancient greek), and old earring without a match but that you have fond memories of… etc.

Can’t be any help on the advent calendar, sorry. Haven’t participated in one since I was a kid. Maybe when my boy’s a little older? I found your blog not long ago — wish I could remember where, so I could give credit — and I am SO GLAD! I’ve been in a creative drought since my son was born a couple of years ago and I’m just recently awake enough to find my way back. Your blog and many of the wonderful ones you link to are now providing me with tons of inspiration to get back at it. I have missed my creative time like crazy so THANK YOU!!!!!

For our advent calendar, my mom put in the nativity scene so we got to pull it out part by part. I always tried to work things out so that I got to pull out baby Jesus to put him on the manger! Thanks for doing the giveaway. I love those Denyse Schmidt fabrics!
I just finished my advent calendar last night and I am using a stick for our place marker I haven’t worked out a marker yet. I put one scripture in each pocket and in a few pockets (1 a week). I put a handwritten scrap of paper saying read this book and do this activity. Example: Read J is for Jesus and eat a candy cane. I don’t want to fill each pocket up with treats because I don’t want the focus to be on the payoff.
I love those colors. My advent calendar has small wooden ornaments that we hang on the tree. They are of the manager scene and we always talk about each part of the manger scene.

hmm…. are you looking for physical things or activities? here are some activities: bake sugar cookies, visit a lonely friend, sing carols, make ornaments, write letter to someone serving in the military, take turns telling each other what your favorite things are (or what they love about each other), make mangers out of popsicle sticks…..

If you don’t mind getting glitter everywhere I’d put little packages full of glitter in a day and have your boys rip them open. Glitter everywhere but it’s usually good for a laugh.

Let’s see… something to put in the pocket of an advent calendar. What about a note with the first clue to take them on a scavenger hunt around the house. It could end with some cookies, a new DVD (from the cheap section at Target of course) or maybe a bowl of popcorn with a “family date” to watch a Christmas movie.

Growing up our advent calendar always had activities as well – like making cookies, setting up the nativity, getting the tree, plus smaller stuff like watching our favorite movies. It was so exciting!
I have not unearthed our Advent calendar yet! My daughter always likes candy, but sometimes I would put in a dollar bill, or a note for a treasure hunt, with something special at the end!
Ooh…I just saw an advent fabric calendar and inside each pocket was one of those yummy ghiradelli dark chocolate squares that you buy at the counter at Michaels! I thought it was brilliant. In mine this year, I have my kids take turns (3 kids) and there’s a candy and a numbered poker chip in each pocket. At Christmas, one of the chips will be drawn (numbers in a hat) and that child can be “Santa” that morning.
Corny but sounded fun when I made it. The kids each have a little stick of 2 chips by their beds.
BTW…I SO love that line of fabric. I really really really would like to win. 🙂

I just spent about 4 hours on November 29th filing my dd-s calendar with ideas. I tried to go for low prep and easy ideas that bring no extra toys to the house.
— One easy thing is eat dessert before dinner (this would be the day to have fruit salad as dessert, then it is still qualified as food, lol)
— and another real easy no prep is to have an extra book at bedtime (for us it is two extra books because my dh reads in English and I read in Estonian).
— We also have cutting paper snowflakes and hanging them in the house,
— making truffles,
— going out for coco and cookie,
— going to listen caroling,
— picking out a present for giving tree and another day wrapping it up and dropping it off (I picked a little girl the same age as my dd this year)
— leaving a cookie for Santa on the last day,
— going to see trains on store window (we always spend at least half an hour watching)
— making popcorn garlands,
— decorating a bought gingerbread house,
— making a present for her teacher,
— watching a Christmas movie,
— going to Christmas Fair (at waldorf school)
— going out to buy a special candy cane to eat right then.
— we might go and paint pottery one day as well.
I also strongly suggest filling your own calendar with the activities so that you are prepared, i.e. can check the night before if anything needs to be switched out. I find it very handy to have my own paper with everything written down, that way I can see at a glance if we have anything elaborate on any given day and whether we can fit in something on a certain night.

That fabric is lovely! As for the advent calendar… my favorite year for the advent calendar when I was young was when my folks interspersed things they loved about me in the calendar. Later, my mom admitted it was because they were tired of looking for little things to put in the calendar, but it was the most meaningful gift I’ve ever received.

Great fabric! I admit I’ve purchased some of this line in the past and loved it, so I could use some more! Our advent calendar only ever had mini ornaments in it (which were actually just buttons on little safety pins) and we pinned them on a felt tree. I’m not sure what real advent calendars are or how they work… 🙂

As for something to put in the pockets? How about some homemade ornaments to hang around the house on a tree…specifically made for each boy by mom. It would be something special that you could do every year. Be creative and use a different theme each year.

Advent calendar… I have been thinking of this myself…. depending on the age of your boys… maybe some art supplies, aka shaped crayons, or special eraser… something beside candy!
That is a wonderful giveaway that you have there. I think candy is a must for the calendar but maybe to make it a little more fun you could get little toys from the dollar store like silly putty or matchbox cars.

I would suggest putting a candied nut or two per child in a home made advent calendar.
Lovely! I’m not sure what size it is, but you could put in stickers or rubber balls.
You could put the name of a favorite Christmas song to listen to in a pocket, maybe make it into a treasure hunt. Put a clue in each pocket for them to find something that day.

Ooooh one of my favorite fabric lines!!! Along with the usual candy and trinkets, we put activities in the advent calendar pockets: Christmas light drive, movie night, bake cookies, etc.

movie tickets, coupons for activities like a movie night or driving to see holiday lights, bouncy ball or tiddlywinks, silly putty, bath bubbles or toys, a clue to help them find a bigger object hiding somewhere else, a coupon for a date night….

for my kids, decorating the tree is their fav part of the holidays. so how about a little ornament for each day, and a tiny tree they can hang them on.
Such cute fabric. Great stuff in your shop too. As far as what to put in your advent pockets, I say activities to do with family. Paper snowflakes, popcorn garland, make Christmas cards for nursing home, create/draw tags for gifts.

My girls are very young so this year we just candy in the advent calendar, but as they get older, I plan to put little pieces of paper with tasks written on them. I plan to include things the girls can do for others, such as make a handmade Christmas card for Grandma or go visit someone in the nursing home or bake cookies to take to a neighbor. I want the things to be fun, but I also want to focus them on doing for others instead of just gimme, gimme, gimme.

2 yards ! Very generous ! You can make matching games (like the Memory game ) with fabric and interfacing and put images on top of the front of each card using fusible web. Just search for matching game on etsy and it’ll show you ! You could put a set in each day’s pocket.

As for the pockets of your advent calendar, I’ve seen people use polymer clay to form little symbols of the Christmas story. You could also find toys (like a toy hammer to remind your kids that Jesus and Joseph were carpenters, etc).

Great fabrics! I put the following things in our advent calendar for my daughter: coins, individually wrapped candies/chocolates, play jewelry (bracelets and necklaces are cheap at the dollar store, and the stretchy ones scrunch up very small), stickers, notes/clues for something larger that won’t fit in the box/pocket!
Finger puppets for the pockets! My daughter loves those.

The advent calendar we had growing up had felt (If I remember they were stuffed) objects in each pocket that were related to Christmas somehow, a present, a gingerbread, a star, a tree, etc. You took one out and pinned it on the felt tree above the pockets. That’s an idea I want to use.

This is a great giveaway, I would love to get some of the larger fabric. I thought about making an advent calendar this year but haven’t gotten around to it. Oh well. You could put in those little army men with parachutes that you used to get from quarter machines. Those were always lots of fun to toss off the balcony.

I made an advent calendar for my niece last year and filled it with rather a lot of different things. I put little messages and things for her to do in each pocket, with a basket of wrapped extras on the table beneath it. I wrapped a jar of homemade jam and put a little note in a Sunday pocket to use it on her pancakes. I printed some very basic Christmas cards and included stamped, addressed envelopes for her grandparents, so she could color in the cards and sign her name. On one of the days I put a note that said to think of five people she loved and call them to tell them so. I like things like that better than just a little piece of chocolate. I say put a little note in one or two of the pockets that says something like ‘family game night’ or ‘read Christmas book together’. Something super simple and cheap that gets the whole family hanging out together!!

Candy is always nice for advent pockets but I love putting in little notes with “something” special that the kids get to do that day. Like making cookies with mama, or build a gingerbread house, watch a special movie with daddy!

I am always at a loss as to what to put in the advent calendar. I have a bag of Hershey’s kisses and a few ornaments but I haven’t even put mine up yet! But I have to say I love love the idea of writing a note on a slip of paper. What a great way to avoid consumerism but make it fun!

EAch day (or once a week) have an idea for some service you and your family could do together. Example: serve at a soup kitchen, carol at a hospital or assisted living, give anonymous gifts to a family in need, clean dad’s car, let the kids do something for each other…

Great giveaway! We fill our advent calendar with a different activity for us to do as a family each day. For example, one night we’ll take a wagon ride through the neighborhood to look at christmas lights, another day we’ll bake Christmas cookies, another one we’ll donate food to a shelter, etc.
Our grand kids still like candy, but being teens they thought the calendar with candy was for babies as they put it. So this year I filled the drawers with lip gloss, nailpolish, jewelry and other girlie things, this they thought was way cool. Good thing Grandpa had mad the boxes a good size and if the item is to big I put a note in the drawer and they exchange the note for the treat.
When I was younger I always looked forward to the chocolates my Mom put in our advent calendar, and since there were three of us we only got candy once every 3 days 🙂 Not as unhealthy!

I was planning on just having simple things like read a christmas book, dance to the christmas music, watch a christmas movie, make cards/draw, or have a small ornament to hang on the tree.

We have scriptures and nativity pieces in our advent calendar, but you can put a service in there your children can do–make a card for an older, lonely person or make cookies to take to the elderly.

I love scraps! What’s an FRE? I’ll take it anyway. For your advent calendar: cookies are always the best. And miniature things: playing cards, notebooks, sewing kits, baby silverware, flashlights… Also IOU’s for meals or activities, depending on the recipient.

We do the usual: candy, ornaments, coupons for things/activities. My husband still raves about the one I did where I gave him “space” – I cleaned out a junk section so he could have it to store HIS junk 😉
